King Alfred's version of St. Augustine's Soliloquies

This edition of King Alfred’s version of St. Augustine’s Soliloquies fills a long-standing gap in Old English studies. Alfred’s text has never appeared in a fully adequate edition, and those which have been published are no longer generally available. This volume consists of an extensive and important introduction, the text of the Soliloquies, substantial notes and commentary, a bibliography, and a highly useful glossary. Thomas Carnicelli discusses all problems raised by the text, among them those of language, orthography, syntax, sources, the relation of the Soliloquies to Alfred’s other works, and the question of derived or common authorship with the Boethius.
